Clinic for Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery: Hip Department

Hip endoprosthetics nowadays have a useful life of 10 to 20 years: despite these good results, it is advisable to consult your orthopaedic specialist in the first six months after the operation and the again after approximately 5 years. In the event of complaints, patients should be examined immediately: We are at their disposal for this in our endoprosthetic surgery hours.

Sometimes the artificial joint may loosen and the prosthetic therefore fail – an unfavourable development which may be accelerated by over-exertion or overweight. In this case, the doctor will recommend partial or complete replacement of the prosthetic. In this operation, the orthopaedic surgeon removes the existing (primary) prosthetic and replaces the loosened or worn part of the implant with a revision prosthetic.

Here, bone defects are replaced with bone transplants. We are one of the few clinics in Germany with their own bone bank and use special modular prosthetics which can bridge the bone defect depending on the requirements of the patient: In the case of infections, the prosthetic must be removed and the infection first treated before a new prosthetic is inserted again.

These operations should only be carried out by surgeons with great experience in the field of endoprosthetics: At the Waldkrankenhaus, we perform around 200 replacement operations on the hip per year and are thus one of the most experienced revision clinics in Germany.

As a Chair for Orthopaedics, we are also involved in implant research and in the optimisation of implant materials.

Bone bank

The Chair for Orthopaedics of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena at the Waldkrankenhaus Eisenberg has its own bone bank. As the only clinic in Thuringia so far, we have a permit in accordance with §§ 20 b and c (Arzneimittelgesetz = German medicinal products act), which enables the production of the "pharmaceutical bone" by law and permits operation of such a bone bank.
