Instrumented 3D-gait/-movement analysis

Specialist services

The instrumented gait analysis allows doctors and scientists to exactly record the movements of people. In contrast to the subjective assessment of the gait pattern, where doctors or physiotherapists observe the patient, the computer-aided version provides measurement data which allow an objective evaluation of the gait pattern.

Normal walking on a level surface is analysed with measurements in the laboratory (walking distance approx. 10 m - with 10 repetitions where possible). For this, before the measurement, spherical, reflective markers are attached to the body at defined anatomical points with double-sided adhesive tape. Special infra-red cameras, which are connected to a computer, record the movement of these markers in the room. Thus the extent of movement of the joints of the lower limbs can be recorded and the load applied to the ankle, knee and hip joints determined with measuring platforms set into the floor. In addition, the movements of the pelvis and, if required, of the upper body can be measured.

The patient benefits in two ways: On the one hand, the findings are supplemented before the therapy and the diagnosis is refined, and on the other the doctors can check the success of the therapy with repeated gang analyses. This method is specifically used for certain illnesses.
