Endoprosthetic surgery hours

Clinic for Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery: Knee Department

In our endoprosthetic surgery hours we advise and treat patients with all forms of primary or secondary coxarthrosis or gonarthrosis. Here we answer their questions on possible therapy options and according to requirements discuss the indication and method of the upcoming operation.

Both operations to maintain the joints (pelvic osteotomies, femural osteotomies, knee joint osteotomies) as well as all types of joint replacement with different prosthetic models and anchoring types.

In addition, we treat patients who contact us after a primary hip or knee endoprosthetic operation with various complications such as wear, loosening or infection.

For therapeutic planning, it is advantageous to visit our surgery hours in our out-patients department. A referral note from the current quarter is required.

If you provide your patient with existing doctor's letters, reports and X-ray, MRI or ultrasound tests, you help to prevent duplicate examinations and waiting time in the out-patients department.

Diagnosis

On the first visit in the endoprosthetic surgery hours, the doctor speaks to the patient about the type and intensity of the complaints. He or she information on previous injuries and any existing concomitant disorders. As various medicines damage the bones and thus may be conducive to development of the arthrosis, the doctor will also ask about the medicines which the patient is taking.

After the anamnesis, the doctor performs a thorough physical examination: He or she thus records any symptoms such as muscle atrophy or malpositions and can thus assess the extent of the arthrosis. In addition, the doctor feels the affected joints and checks their mobility.

These findings, possibly together with X-ray or MRI tests, enable the doctor to carry out an exact diagnosis. After the doctor has formed an exact picture of the disease, he or she plans further procedures together with the patient.

A joint-replacement operation is not always necessary immediately, as specific physiotherapy and medicinal pain treatment may postpone the time of the operation. In discussion with the patient, the doctor explains the alternatives and jointly finds the optimum therapy.

Treatment

Specific conservative physiotherapy measures (physiotherapy, heat applications, massages, electrotherapy) may alleviate the pains and improve mobility.

In our hospital, the patient has access to an experienced team of physiotherapists, who cover the complete orthopaedic spectrum and work closely with our out-patients department.

In addition, the specialists in our medical supply store support the patients with individually produced healing aids and equipment. Only when these conservative methods have been exhausted, will the doctor recommend an operation.

Documents

On the first visit, the doctor discusses the course of the illness so far with the patient. The patient can note down in advance the details of previous injuries or operations as well as the names and quantities of the medicines to be taken. This makes the doctor's work easier and shortens the stay in the out-patients department. For an exact diagnosis, the doctor requires doctor's letters and findings of the doctor treating the patient as well as any existing X-ray and MRI images.

A referral note from the current quarter from the G.P. or specialist currently treating the patient is advantageous.
