Clinic for Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery: Spinal Column Department

There are many different types of back pain, which can roughly be divided into three areas: Pains caused by slipped discs, pains caused by muscle cramps and those resulting from a change in the vertebral bodies, e.g. slipped vertebrae or osteoporosis. Common to all are more or less severe pains, which may be acute, sporadic, recurring or chronic.

In our spinal column surgery hours, we treat people with muscle cramps due to incorrect loading, skeletal disorders (e.g. osteoporosis) and wear symptoms of the spinal column or intervertebral discs. In addition, we treat patients with chronic inflammations (rheumatism), malpositioning of the spinal column (scoliosis) or injuries caused by accidents.

Diagnosis

Many back pains are harmless: in nine out of ten cases, symptoms subside again after a short time even without medical treatment However, if the pains are severe or do not disappear even after several days, a doctor should always be consulted. This also applies to symptoms of paralysis or loss of feeling in the arms or legs.

On the first visit in the spinal column surgery hours, the doctor speaks to the patient about the type and intensity of the complaint. Here details are also important, for example if the pain occurs when at rest or under load and whether it affects the arm or leg.

After the consultation, the doctor performs a thorough physical examination: here, the doctor examines the mobility of the spinal column and checks for pains caused by pressure or 'knocking' pain, in order to detect possible muscle cramp or changes in small vertebral joints. In addition, the doctor tests strength and reflexes of the organism in order to rule out any existing nerve damage. If necessary, the doctor supplements the examination with an x-ray or MRI test.

Treatment

Many back complaints can be combated with conservative therapy methods: Specific physiotherapy, physical activity and medicinal therapy alleviate or completely eliminate pains.

If these methods do not work, the doctor has several in-patient therapy options open. Only when all conservative treatment options have been exhausted and a corresponding indication exists, will the doctor recommend an operation.

Documents

On the first visit, the doctor discusses the course of the illness so far with the patient. The patient can note down in advance the details of previous injuries or operations as well as the names and quantities of the medicines to be taken. This makes the doctor's work easier and shortens the stay in the out-patients department. For an exact diagnosis, the doctor requires doctor's letters and findings of the doctor treating the patient as well as any existing X-ray and MRI images.

A referral note from the current quarter from the G.P. or specialist currently treating the patient is advantageous.
